    Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, July 21, 2008. A strong storm will whip across the Korean Peninsula before stalling out along the east coast of China and Russia bordering the Sea of Japan. The effects of the storm will be double. First, it will carry significant moisture that will produce heavy rain through North Korea and into parts of northern China and southeastern Russia. Second, because of the storm's intensity, it will produce strong winds through the Korean Peninsula. The winds will gradually wane as the day progresses, however.

Meanwhile, typical moisture will continue to produce widespread showers and thunderstorms through southeast China.

Scattered showers are certainly possible through the southern half of Japan, but most of the country will be dry due to a high pressure system affecting the country from the Pacific Ocean.

Tokyo will rise into the mid-80s(F)/upper 20s(C), while Shanghai will see temperatures in the lower 90s(F)/mid-30s(C). Seoul will rise into the upper 70s(F)/mid-20s(C).

For Australia, a fierce storm will depart eastward from the east coast of the country and allow precipitation to gradually wane in the southeastern portion of the country. The associated cold front will stretch well northward through Queensland and into the Gulf of Carpentaria. This feature will produce long-lasting precipitation because the front itself will not be fast-moving.

A high pressure system will build to the west of these two features and produce dry conditions for the rest of the country.

Sydney will rise into the mid-60s(F)/upper 10s(C), while Melbourne will see temperatures in the mid-50s(F)/lower 10s(C). Brisbane will rise into the lower 70s(F)/lower 20s(C).

    Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog:

Hello, Dolly; so long, Bertha; Cristobal keeps on chugging along

    Dr. Jeff Masters

Tropical Storm Cristobal continues to chug along the coast of North Carolina, dropping welcome rains over the eastern portion of the state. Morehead City radar shows a well-organized storm with plenty of spiral bands of thunderstorms. These bands have only moderate amounts of rainfall, which is fortunate, since Cristobal is moving so slowly. Rainfall amounts from Cristobal have generally been below two inches over eastern North Carolina, with one isolated pocket of f...

    Weather History:

    Did you know that...

While not necessarily specific to this date, an interesting statistic occurred from May 30th to the beginning of fall in 1588. During this time period, the sea claimed 50 ships of the Spanish Armada, killing 4,000 men. The sea claimed more Spanish ships than the English did during that time period.
